Autumn Season

Hedge Trimming

At this time of year, the restrictions protecting nesting birds have lapsed, so it’s time to trim hedges and other area where they may have been nesting.

Grass Care and Maintenance

It’s also a good time to review any grass requirements, such as reseeding or turfing as the scorching sun has now gone until next year.

The risk of the new grass drying up and dying has receded, and as the climate becomes wetter, the task of watering new seeds or turf becomes much less onerous.

Turf is best laid from mid-autumn to the end of winter, providing that the soil is not frosty or too wet. As the grass does not need mowing it can be left relatively undisturbed to settle.

Tree Care and Maintenance

It’s a good time to start planning tree works, especially if the tree(s) have some kind of protection order and permission is needed before work can start.

If possible, tree works are best done in the dormant season, late winter to spring, when the trees have shed most of their leaves and are lighter. But as permission can often take six weeks or so to come through, now is the time to start the process.

Herbaceous Perennials and Ornamental Grasses Care

Autumn is also a good time to cut back herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses, to tidy the beds and promote growth for next year.

However, some people prefer to leave the dead flowers in place to provide winter habitat and food for wildlife and then cut back in the spring.
